Course objectives
To formally train an adequate number of anesthesia providers.
To train competent staff capable of providing a safe and cost effective anaesthesia.
To improve anaesthetic services through scientific research studies.
Entry requirements for candidates
- Each District Hospital is represented
- Qualified Nurse level A2 (Enrolled Nurse)
- At least one year working experience
- Pass a written and oral interview
- Secondary school certificate. Candidates are selected and forwarded to KHI by the National Examination Council
Selection of clinical placement sites for third year students.
A survey is carried out by departmental staff in order to identify suitable clinical placements sites. Students are then sent to those sites.
Rotations of students on those sites take place on monthly basis to enable students acquire different experience.

Training
FIRST YEAR:
Based at Nyamishaba for shared theory lessons almost the
whole year without anaesthesia supervised clinical practice.
SECOND YEAR:
Anaesthesia Supervised-Clinical Practice in the Morning
Theory Lessons in the Afternoon
THIRD YEAR:
No Anaesthesia-Related Theory lessons in third year
Anaesthesia Supervised Clinical Practice throughout the Year Research Projects to Mark the End of the Course.
Third year supervised clinical practice
Students in third year were sent to selected hospitals on monthly rotational basis to acquire more practical skills in Anaesthetic Practice (Referral & District hospitals).
Coverage of the new topics in third year- not possible as students were scattered in different clinical placements except in the last three months of the academic year when
they meet again at KHI.
