Building on the past-shaping the Future

Established in 1998 in line with the KHI mission, the dental departement is the only dental training facility in the whole country of Rwanda. It is committed towards training and producing oral healthcare professionals, from scientific background and equipped with knowledge and skills to meet the oral healthcare needs of all communities in Rwandans Healthcare context.

To date it operates a modern and dependable dental consultancy center, an extensive network of community-based services, educational and research activities.

Notable contribution to the National Health Agenda is the KHI-Dental department’s involvement in the community outreach oral health programmes, in providing free dental services in the under-served rural areas of Nyamasheke (Cyangugu), Nyagatare and Gatsibo Districts.

Realizing dental excellence at KHI

In keeping with the Kigali Health Institute’s overall strategic plan to be a center of excellence in training and development of health professionals, the department of dentistry is the home to highly qualified, eager and competent oral health professional staff, modern and dependable facilities, competence-based curricula and the best possible clinical and community outreach based training programmes.
The Institute’s department of Dentistry, helps students realize their dreams of successful and productive careers by providing them with exceptional friendly learning and clinical training environment.

We have a responsibility to reach out to the underserved communities and promote oral health.

The department is always at the forefront of organising preventive, promotive and interceptive community-based projects in concert with the district health administrative systems of Nyamasheke, Nyagatare, Gatsibo and Kirehe Districts to serve the community in these areas and its environs.

sea, the beaches Through a preventive and minimally interventive philosophy, the department extends its social corporate responsibility services to school children, by carrying out school-based Oral hygiene/education programs (Health Promotion Interventions).

This is based on our belief that schools offer appropriate settings for health promotion for children since the school provide an environment for improving health; self-esteem behaviors and life skills.

Clinical training and patient care center

The Department boasts of a dental consultancy center with well equipped state-of-the-art equipment and modern cutting edge ICT technology, suitable for advancing modern approach to quality dental teaching and clinical training, continuing professional development and patient care in all major specialties. Hence, “Bridging the Gap between research based training and best dental practice”.
