Description of the Profession


Medical Imaging Technologists are health care professionals who use radiation (X-rays), Magnetism and Sound to create medical images of the body. Other names used for the profession are: Radiologic Technologist,   Radiographer, Medical Imaging Scientist, Medical Radiation Scientist or X-ray Technologist.

The career combines the use of modern medical equipment with patient interaction.

Medical Imaging Technologists find employment opportunities in hospitals, private imaging centers, and health centers. There are also opportunities in sales, marketing, research, education and industry.

Education


The curriculum requires successful completion of 360 credits in Medical Imaging courses and general education courses designed to develop competency in diagnostic radiography. The Medical Imaging  Program is designed for full-time day students and requires three years of education.

Once accepted into the Medical Imaging programme, students are required to become day students with full time educational responsibilities for each semester of scheduled classes for the length of the program. Students are required to achieve particular number of hours of clinical experience at assigned clinical education settings for successful program completion. Advanced Diploma in Medical Imaging Sciences

Applicants holding high school certificates issued and accredited by the Ministry of Education or its equivalent with credits in Mathematics-Chemistry-Biology and Physics-Chemistry- Biology are eligible.

Advanced Diploma of Ophthalmic Clinical Officer


The Ophthalmic Clinical Officer is an Allied Health Professional worker, who has been given 3 years training in Ophthalmology. Ophthalmic Clinical Officers’ course requires a broad knowledge base covering a variety of theoretical and practical skills in order to manage a human eye successfully.


Admission requirements

Applicants should have high school certificates in Nursing issued and accredited by the Ministry of Education or its equivalent or with credits in Mathematics-Chemistry-Biology and Physics-Chemistry- Biology are eligible.

The graduates of this program are para-ophthalmic personnel who are trained with knowledge and skills to assist the ophthalmologist in various eye care activities including outpatient and inpatient patient care, assisting in the operating room and performance of minor surgery, use and routine maintenance of ophthalmic equipment, documentation, maintenance of ophthalmic medical records, patient education and counseling. The clinical ophthalmic technicians in Rwanda are expected to work independently in district and regional hospitals, under the appropriate support and supervision of an individual who is qualified to practice in ophthalmology

Course Design

The curriculum was completely revised in 2011. It is customized for Rwanda and is based on the guidelines and core curriculum laid down by the Allied Health Curriculum Task Force of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO).

The curriculum is covered over a period of 3 years organized into 6 semesters and is designed to equip the candidates with the required cognitive skills, practical skills and empathic skills necessary to perform the above-defined functions. Instruction is based on the defined core content. It also includes some common compulsory modules that all KHI students are expected to study irrespective of discipline. 5 are taught in Year 1, 2 in Year 2 and 1 in Year 3. The course is fulltime and aims to spend as much time as is possible in the training setting on skills development. The medium of instruction is English.
