OVERVIEW OF FACULTY OF COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT
The Faculty of Community Health Sciences which originally comprised of the departments of Environmental Health Sciences has established other two departments of (1) Nutrition and Dietetics, and (2) Clinical Medicine and Community Health. The faculty also hosts training for the award of a Post Graduate Certificate in Counseling designed for personnel working on AIDS programs and houses the office responsible for Community Outreach activities.
The faculty is mandated to train health professionals in the respective disciplines that can skillfully deliver both preventive and health promotion services in Rwanda and beyond. To fulfill that role, the faculty ensures close supervision of the students both during the theoretical and practical sessions as well as during the clinical/field placement. The faculty jointly with various health facilities and district personnel in Rwanda are increasingly working more closely to strengthen the hands-on training of students. The trainees are provided with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for efficient and cost-effective primary health care in Rwanda.
The expected outcome of the faculty is graduates with competency to provide quality education for behavioral change, employing community-based approaches for health care delivery, conduct research in the areas of disease prevention and provide outreach services to the community using the available expertise.
To ensure that lecturers have update knowledge and skills, continued professional development is critical. The staff is encouraged to seek funding from within and outside the country for the purpose of capacity building through collaborative endeavors and they strive to establish networks with other training institutions for sharing experiences and with other development partners for carrying out research, partnerships and direct sponsorship opportunities for implementing intervention projects.
The faculty short and long term plans aim at contributing towards achievement of Kigali Health Institute vision of being “a centre of excellence in training and development of health professionals” while abiding with Higher Education Council policies.

Goal/ aims
To train personnel to develop science-based nutritional knowledge and skills required to enhance the quality of life and well-being of all Rwandans through nutrition education, basic research and disease prevention. The acquired knowledge will open doors to compete at international level and advance in their professional life.

The Mission of KHI Counseling program is to promote psychosocial well-being and empower individuals during the process of change.
To develop KHI capacity in training professional counselors and offering counseling services to the Rwandan Community and the neighbouring Francophone countries.
