Our Programs
Currently the biomedical sciences department is running three programs
- A four year Bachelor of biomedical laboratory sciences (BBLS).
- A three year advanced diploma in Medical laboratory sciences (full time-being phased out).
- A three year advanced diploma in medical laboratory sciences (special program, for in service and self sponsored personnel).
Entry Requirements
Bachelors of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences Program
Rwanda national certificates of secondary education with a minimum of 5.0 points in Biochemistry or 4.5 points in mathematics and physics ( from high school examination or its equivalent) and proof of financial support from Government for government sponsored students and proof of deposition of student tuition fee on KHI account for private sponsored students.
Advanced Diploma Program (Full Time)
The department is phasing out a diploma program for day students (last intake now in their final year) and instead has introduced a four year Bachelor’s degree program. Thus; we no longer recruit students for advanced diploma on full time.
Advanced Diploma Program (The special program portion)
Subject to KHI and faculty entry requirement for advanced diploma students
Rwanda national certificates of secondary education with a minimum of 4 points in laboratory technology (current grading system) or 60% (old system)
Proof of financial support from employee or, in case of self sponsorship, bank slip confirming payment of tuition fee and other charges for the program on to KHI account.

Clinical attachment:
Every year, our students go for attachments, the lengths of the attachments and objectives depends on the year of study
Year I students are attached to various District hospitals in the country for a period of eight weeks
Year II students are attached to referral hospitals in Kigali like CHUK (Kigali central teaching hospital), Kanombe Military hospital, King Faisal Hospital- Kigali, National Referral Laboratory, Treatment and Research AIDS Center (TRAC) and many for a period of twelve weeks
Year III: year three students are attached to Butare University Teaching Hospital, the only teaching hospital that offers Histology and Histopathology services, for a period of sixteen weeks
Year four: medical internship in referral hospitals and laboratories for a period of sixteen weeks.
