Departement of Medical Laboratory Sciences

Introduction
The Medical Laboratory Science Department is one of KIGALI HEALH INSTITUTE (KHI) departments which trains students to work in medical laboratories of different hospitals, after 3 years of training. The Medical Laboratory Science is a course which deals with the study of the diagnosis of microorganisms causing diseases to human beings.
Mission
To produce laboratory technologists at A1 level who are competent as health professionals.
Goals towards the community:
1. Perform analytical procedures of laboratory tests and interpret the results
2. Train other health professionals including the A3 and A2.

Partnerships with other universities
The department has got a partnership with the
Columbia University which provides equipments, material and reagents to the
medical laboratory department .
The same university send some lecturers for teaching in the department.
Curriculum development
In order to meet international academic standards, to
prepare A1 graduates for further studies and to satisfy the
need of the community, the Department is preparing a
Bachelor Degree Program which will lead to the award of a bachelor Degree in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences after 5 years of study.
Therefore, this will enable the graduates to :
-Meet a high demand of competent biomedical personnel
-Provide lecturers qualified in this domain
-Prepare potential researchers in this area
To emphasize the theoretical part of the training, the students are
requested to do field practical in medical Laboratories of
referral hospitals such as at King Faisal hospital, CHU/CHK (Kigali University Hospital), CHUB(Butare University Hospital), KMH (Kanombe Military Hospital) and in any other peripheral hospital.
The clinical placements are planned as follow :
1st Year : 1 month
2nd Year : 3 months
3rd year : 3 months
