OVERALL GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
To train a midwife who will carry out midwifery care and offer quality services by applying critical thinking skills, analyzing health-related problems, and taking prompt decisions in a professional manner.

CORE VALUES

  • Ensure continuing professional education and research.
  • Network and partner with different professional organizations globally.
  • Provide Information, Education,
  • Professional Communication and Skills which is relevant to the health needs of the community throughout the duration of training.
    • Keep abreast with the current and changing trends in the field of Midwifery.
    • Provide holistic bio-psycho-social care to individuals, family and community.

Human reproduction has profound physical, psychological, social and cultural significance for people.
This is because it is the source and purpose of life, and hope for a future.
The 4th and 5th Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are also aimed at reducing child mortality and improving maternal health. Our country Rwanda is among the countries with a high maternal and child mortality rate standing at 750/100,000 live births 861/1000 respectively (RDHS 2005).
The first competency-based, student-centred midwifery curriculum of KHI was developed in 1996.
To date, approximately 97 midwives have so far been trained by KHI,
and they are providing services in the different hospitals countrywide.
This number is still inadequate  and cannot meet the demands of the country’s population.
The coverage ratio between midwives and women of reproductive age should be 1:500,
but in reality it is 1:29,000 (Kimonyo 2004).
The department continues to contribute to the National Health Agenda through involvement
in the annual community outreach program at the Kirehe refugee camp in Bukura district.

REALIZING THE MIDWIFERY POTENTIAL AT KHI
The overall strategic plan of KHI is to be a centre of excellence in training and development
     of health professionals.
In line with this plan, from time to time, the department organizes in-house continuing education sessions for staff, and also provide fora where staff can exchange ideas and discuss issues openly.
In addition, the department strives to improve the quality of midwives by attending workshopson teaching methodology and e-learning, development of teaching modules for each subject,on-going assessment and evaluation of students, ensuring that the students use the skills laboratory effectively, and organize meetings with students at the departmental level.
The department develops a continuing training schedule with health facilities within Kigali
and in the districts in order to improve the competency and skills of students. It ensures that all
Educational programs are relevant both to the health needs of The community and

internationally acceptable, thus preparing students to bravely face current and future issues in an ever-changing world. In the area of research, the department aims at strengthening
research through writing of innovative research proposals and conducting research work,
critically analysing students’ dissertations for publication, and finally creating and maintaining a health research data base for the department.

All these strategies are geared towards ensuring that KHI produces excellent, dynamic,

innovative and well-trained midwives who are internationally competitive.
