University of Texas medical team visits KHI
A team of staff from University of Texas, South Western Medical Centre visited Kigali Health Institute this 2nd February 2010. They toured different KHI administrative facilities and laboratories which include dental therapy laboratory, physiotherapy laboratory, medical imaging sciences laboratory and skills lab laboratory.
They also toured the library, ICT centre and breastfeeding corner which has been recently established in KHI to facilitate mothers with babies among staff and students.
After the tour, the head of the delegation, J. Gregory Fitz, M.D. Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Dean, UT Southwestern Medical School expressed his satisfaction about the progress made by KHI in equipping Rwanda’s health sector with qualified health personnel. He added that their visit aims at working with Rwanda’s health sector through long-term and short-term partnerships aimed at improving medical care, medical training and medical research.
As far as research is concerned, the head of the delegation says that there will be the collaboration between the University of Texas and KHI so as facilitate researchers. He further stresses that University of Texas aspire to establish partnership with Rwanda’s Health Institutions by initiating projects that will benefit both Rwanda and University of Texas since they have some similarities shared in their programs.
In his speech, the Rector of Kigali Health Institute underscored the contribution of KHI graduates in various institutions where they are employed. He also emphasized on the good service KHI dental clinic delivers and revealed that it is one of the dental clinics of reference in Rwanda.
He highlighted that there are other programs which might be introduced as long as University of Texas plays a role in KHI capacity building such as Masters in Speech Pathology and strengthening research and consultancy.
