SKILLSLAB-PROJECT with support of VVOB
VVOB stands for the Flemish organization for cooperation and technical assistance (www.vvob.be).
AIM
The skillslab-project aims at developing health personnel training through skillslab in Kigali Health Institute and Rwanda in general by helping to equip KHI with modern teaching /learning methodology, which will improve skills and performance of KHI graduates.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
The objective is to improve the quality of training of all students through standardized practical competence skills, communication ability based on excellence in theoretical background and intellectual skills that meet international standards.
TARGET GROUP
The target group includes all students in pre-service education, and also the in-service students in continued education programs.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The project begun in July 2003 and has achieved the following:
1. Established the project structure.
2. Purchased equipments for the skillslab.
3. Purchased teaching materials, manikins, audio-visual teaching aids, cd-roms, computers, books.
4. Training of teachers and organizations of specialized workshops.
PLANNED ACTIVITIES
- Review Nursing and midwifery curriculum.
- Develop checklists and manuals for nursing and midwifery procedures.
- Develop OSCE.
- Sensitize students for the use of the skillslab methodology.
- Train internal and external teachers of KHI to be committed to the implementation and promotion of the skillslab methodology.
- Improve the quality of supervision of students on clinical placements by training clinical instructors and nurses in the teaching hospitals.
- Attend study visits and conferences.
- Introduce the skillslab in continuing education (in-service training).
